What Is the Purpose of Your Website?

When was the last time you asked yourself — what is actually the purpose of my website?

It’s something we can easily overlook, especially when we’re deep in designing or updating. But coming back to this question can help us create a more intentional space that really supports our business and serves our clients.

At its core, your website exists to guide your client through the process of starting to work with you.

Yes, it can showcase who you are, the amazing trainings you’ve done, and your journey — and there is absolutely space for that. But the main focus should always be about the client's journey. What do they need to know, feel, and do in order to take the next step with you?

WATCH THE MINI TRAINING: What is the purpose of your Website?

Your Website Has (at least) Two Key Purposes

1. The Main Purpose: Make it Easy to Work With You

Your website should clearly lead people toward working with you — whether that’s booking a coaching session, signing up for a class, joining a retreat, or enrolling in a course.

So ask yourself:

  • What’s the first step a client needs to take to work with me?

  • Is that step obvious and easy to find?

  • Am I guiding people toward it in a simple, intentional way?

The journey through your site should be clear and smooth. Think of it like a path — you want your client to know exactly where to go without confusion or second-guessing.

2. The Second Purpose: Start the Relationship

Not everyone who visits your site will be ready to buy right away — and that’s okay. That’s where your secondary purpose comes in.

You want to capture the interest of those who might be the right fit. Invite them to take a gentle first step:

  • Sign up to your mailing list

  • Download a freebie

  • Join a waitlist

  • Fill out an enquiry form

These softer entry points create space for your potential clients to get to know you and your work, before making a bigger commitment. And they give you the opportunity to continue building the relationship — through email nurturing, resources, and gentle education.

Keep it Client-Focused

It’s easy to fall into the trap of making your website a showcase about you — but the most effective websites make the visitor feel seen and understood. They answer the question: What is my client looking for? and provide the path to get there.

Of course, your story and background are valuable, but only in service of helping your potential clients feel safe, inspired, and ready to take that next step with you.

What Do You Want Them to Do?

Every page, every section, should come back to that question:
What do I want someone to do next?

Whether it's the main action (booking a service) or a smaller step (joining a list), your website should make that pathway clear, intuitive, and inviting.

Conclusion

Let this be your gentle nudge to revisit your own website with fresh eyes. Does it reflect your purpose? Is it easy to navigate? Does it speak to your client’s needs?

You don’t need to overhaul everything — sometimes it’s just about refining the path, so the right people can find you and feel ready to say yes.
