When You’re Not Sure What You Want From Your Business Anymore

There can be a point in business where something you once genuinely wanted just doesn’t feel quite right anymore. Maybe you’re still showing up, delivering your work, creating content and keeping everything moving, but somewhere along the way you’ve started to feel disconnected from what you’re doing.

Perhaps you’re going through the motions a little more, there’s some resentment creeping in, or the work that used to light you up simply doesn’t have the same spark anymore. And when that happens, it can be easy to assume that you’ve lost motivation or that there’s something you need to fix, when actually there might be a bigger question underneath it all:

Is this still the business you actually want?

You’re allowed to outgrow what you once wanted

We can spend so much time trying to make our businesses work that we stop asking whether they’re still the businesses we actually want.

Something might have been completely right for you a few years ago. You might have created offers you loved, chosen ways of working that made sense and set goals that genuinely excited you, but naturally things change over time. Your life might look different now, your capacity might have changed, or you might simply know yourself better and have a clearer understanding of what you enjoy, what drains you and how you actually want to work.

And yet, it can be really difficult to let go of something once we’ve already invested so much time and energy into it. We continue delivering an offer because it’s established, keep working towards more clients, more income, a bigger audience or whatever goals we once set ourselves, because there can be this feeling of I started this, so now I need to stick with it.

But changing your mind doesn’t mean that what you created before was wrong or that you’ve somehow failed. Sometimes you’ve simply changed and outgrown something that was right for an earlier version of you.

Are you lacking motivation — or lacking direction?

When you feel disconnected from your business, it can very easily look like a lack of motivation. You don’t feel particularly inspired, you struggle to get excited about your work and everything starts to feel a little heavier than it used to.

But underneath that lack of motivation there can sometimes be something else going on. There might be a disconnect between what you’re currently doing and what you actually want now, and I think that’s an important distinction because trying to force yourself to become more motivated isn’t necessarily going to help if the bigger problem is that something no longer feels right.

Sometimes we need to give ourselves enough space to notice what that disconnection is actually telling us.

Before you fix it, pause

When something doesn’t feel right in our business, the temptation can be to immediately look for the next solution. Maybe we need a new offer, different marketing, more content, a better system or an entirely new direction.

And some of those changes might eventually be exactly what’s needed, but they can also become a kind of distraction work if we haven’t first stopped to look at the bigger question underneath.

I know I can very quickly go into How can I make this work? when something isn’t going the way I want it to, and there’s quite a pushy feeling that comes with that. We keep trying different things, tweaking and fixing, when perhaps the question we need to ask first is:

Do I actually want this?

If the answer is yes, then we can start looking at how to make it work in a way that feels more sustainable. But before we get there, it can be really helpful to come back to the bigger question of what do I actually want from my business now?

What do you actually want from your business now?

I think this is something worth checking in with regularly because we evolve, our lives change and naturally our businesses will evolve alongside us.

You might want to ask yourself whether you still want to work with the clients you’re currently working with, whether you enjoy delivering your work in the way you do now, whether you actually want to grow in the direction you’re heading and whether you want your weeks to continue looking the way they currently do.

You can also look a little wider than the business itself. How much do you actually want to work? What do you want to have space for outside of work? What do you want to be known for, what would you really like to stop doing, and where do you still notice some spark or excitement when you think about your work?

You don’t have to answer all of these questions straight away, and the intention isn’t to create another list of things you suddenly need to figure out. It’s more about creating enough space to be curious again and notice what comes up when you stop focusing only on what you think you should be doing.

Does your business still fit your life?

One of the biggest questions underneath all of this is whether your business still fits the life you actually want to live.

When we’re building a business, it can very easily become the dominant part of our lives. There can be so much ambition and determination to make it work that, without really noticing, we start squeezing everything else in around the business instead.

Especially if you’ve experienced burnout before, at some point you might start to realise that this way of working simply isn’t sustainable. Your business needs to fit your life — not the other way around.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to leave your business behind or completely change what you do. You might still really love your work, but want to change the way you deliver it, the goals you’re working towards, how much you work or simply the shape you want your business to have.

Sometimes it isn’t about starting again. It’s about allowing the business you already have to evolve with you and reconnecting it to the life you actually want now.

You don’t need to know what comes next yet

I think one of the hardest parts of questioning your direction is feeling like you need to know what you’re going to do instead. If this isn’t right anymore, then surely you need a new plan, a new offer or a clear idea of where you’re going next.

But you really don’t need to have that figured out straight away.

Sometimes the first step isn’t knowing exactly what comes next. It’s slowing down enough to question what you currently have, noticing what no longer feels right and allowing yourself to be curious about what you might want instead.

Even just recognising that there could be another way can give you some of your power and authority back. You’re not an employee in your own business who has to continue doing something simply because that’s how it has always been done.

It’s your business, and you’re allowed to change it. You’re allowed to change your mind, outgrow something that once felt right or recognise that the way you’ve been doing things simply isn’t working for you anymore.

You can slow down first, give yourself some space to reconnect with what you actually want and then, when you’re ready, begin to make a plan from there.

If you stopped thinking about how to make your current business work, what would you allow yourself to want instead?

I’d love to know — what insight are you taking from this?
What’s coming up for you as you reflect?
